A professor giving a talk beside a lectern, one hand open in the air, in a shirt and tie and a soft dark knitted jacket with fine chalk stripes that are not quite straight.

17:15, the colloquium

Louis Bachelier, Paris, 1900: a price moves like a walk with no memory, each step as likely one way as the other. Five years later Einstein found the same law in specks of dust jostled by water. Such a walk strays slowly, as the square root of the number of steps: the thirty-six steps of a stripe carry it about three stitches, some six millimetres. The same law, never the same path twice; the seed on the label gives yours back.

Brownian Stripe Jacket

CHF 520 working price

For the five o’clock colloquium: it wears like a cardigan, reads like a jacket, and the right pocket takes two chalks.

The banker’s chalk stripe, corrected: nothing a market draws is straight. Each stripe is knitted as its own random walk, a stitch to the left or the right at a time. From the back row it is a chalk-stripe jacket; the label says which one is yours.

A study: nothing can be ordered yet. The photograph is a generated image, not a picture of a made piece or of a real person.

  • Merino 12: extra-fine merino, 12-gauge double jacquard, the stripes knitted in, not printed: firm as cloth, soft as a cardigan
  • Chalk stripes one stitch wide and 16 stitches apart, about 32 mm. Every 2 cm each stripe tosses three coins: all heads, one stitch to the left; all tails, one to the right; otherwise straight on. Thirty-six tosses from hem to shoulder
  • Numbered inside with its seed, which reproduces every stripe; one vermilion stitch inside the hem at centre back, where the middle stripe starts
  • Unlined, soft shoulder, notch lapels, two horn buttons; patch pockets, the right one with a slot for two chalks and a pencil; a low inside pocket for the A5 notebook
  • 73 cm long on a 48; cut unisex in Italian sizes: a 42 is a women’s IT 40. Outside: the horizon tab at the back of the neck, 40 × 5 mm, knitted in the colour of the ground
  • Cut for: Lab Notebook, Twelve and One
