15:40, the wet lab
The logistic curve. Verhulst wrote it down in 1838 for a population that grows until its food says stop: slow, fast, slow, level. It is also the fraction of a weak acid that has given up its proton, plotted against pH, and its midpoint is where a buffer holds hardest. And it is the function neural networks used for decades to turn a sum into a decision. Two equilibria, one unstable and one stable, and the path from the first to the second.
Equilibrium · Side-buttoned laboratory jacket in wool gabardine
Sigmoid Jacket

For the afternoon at the bench: it closes at the side, nothing gets in at the front, and the cuffs seal.
The other laboratory coat: the one that wraps across the chest and buttons down the side, so a spill finds no opening. Cut to the thigh in dark wool gabardine, the cloth of a suit. The edge of the wrap is one curve, and the curve has a name.
A study: nothing can be ordered yet. The photograph is a generated image, not a picture of a made piece or of a real person.
- Gabardine 310: dry worsted wool gabardine, 310 g/m², woven tight enough that a splash sits on it before it soaks in; unlined, seams bound. It is a jacket, not protective equipment
- The front wraps right over left and buttons down the left flank on a 16 cm underlay. The edge of the wrap is cut on the logistic curve, from the centre of the collar to the flank in one S, with one vermilion bar-tack at its midpoint
- Stand collar; horn buttons; a fine rib cuff set 3 cm inside each sleeve, which seals the wrist and shows only when the arm is raised
- Side slits pass through to your trouser pockets; a chest pocket under the wrap, divided for two pens; an inside pocket for the A5 notebook
- Mid-thigh, 84 cm long on a 48; cut to go over a knit. Cut unisex in Italian sizes: a 42 is a women’s IT 40. Outside: the horizon tab at the back of the neck, 40 × 5 mm, woven in the colour of the cloth
- Cut for: Lab Notebook
