Archimedes, On the Equilibrium of Planes, Book I, Proposition 15: a trapezium balances at a point on the line joining the middles of its two parallel sides, nearer the longer one. For this bag, 60 cm across the mouth, 37 at the base and 41 tall, that point is 22.1 cm above the base. Hang the cut panel from any corner and the point comes to rest directly under your hand.

For the walk in from the station: A4 flat, a laptop, a sleeve for the notebook, a slot for the chalk.
A large, soft tote in suede: wide at the mouth, narrow at the base, two slim handles, a strap that stows inside and no hardware in sight. Its one mark is a red stitch at the point on which it balances.
A study: nothing can be ordered yet. The photograph is a generated image, not a picture of a made piece or of a real person.
- Suede 1.4: split cowhide suede, 1.4 mm, dyed through; about 1 kg empty. It marks in rain, and while it is new it can rub on pale cloth
- Front and back each cut as one trapezium: 60 cm at the mouth, 37 at the base, 41 tall. The gussets, 23 cm deep, fold inward when it is carried, which is what makes the top corners flare. It takes A4 flat and a 16-inch laptop
- One vermilion bar-tack at the centroid of the front, 22.1 cm up the centre line, sewn through a leather washer inside. It holds the foot of the pocket panel: a sleeve for the A5 notebook, a slot for the chalk box, two pencil loops
- Half-lined: a band of Chalk drill round the mouth carries the pocket panel and hides the magnetic snap and the two rings of the shoulder strap, which is cut in the same suede and stows inside
- Two slim flat handles with a 24 cm drop, to pass over a coat sleeve, stitched through to leather backing inside; a loose base board in the same suede. No hardware showing. Outside: the horizon tab at the centre of the back’s top edge, 40 × 5 mm, in the same suede
