Inside this curve the cubic x³ + ax + b = 0 has three real roots; outside it has one; on it, two of them merge. Whitney proved in 1955 that when a smooth surface is flattened onto a plane, folds and cusps like this one are the only singularities that survive a nudge. A pleat says the same in wool: three layers inside, one outside.

A long coat for the walk between buildings. A plain seam runs down the back to the shoulder blades; there, at a single point, it opens into one deep pleat.
