23:40, the machine room
The first picture of a black hole, of M87*, was published on 10 April 2019. It is not an even ring: it is brighter in the south, where the gas turning round the hole comes towards us. Light from a source that approaches arrives bluer, in quicker succession and in a narrower beam, and its brightness over all colours goes as the fourth power of the Doppler factor δ. For an opaque ring turning at a third of the speed of light, seen from its own plane, the point that comes straight towards us is exactly sixteen times as bright as the point that goes straight away. The facing is cut to that law. One third is our number, chosen for the sixteen: round M87* the gas is faster, and we look almost down its axis.

A black zip hoodie with nothing on it. Inside the hood, along the neck, one crescent of vermilion: the bright side of the ring round a black hole, deep at the centre of the back and a hairline by the time it reaches the zip. Hood down, it shows under the nape; hood up, nothing gets out.

- Fleece 480: cotton fleece, 480 g/m², washed black; unbrushed inside, so it wears cool in a machine room
- Inside the hood, where a neck tape would cover the neck seam, one facing of vermilion cotton twill on the black lining, cut in one piece. Its depth is 2 mm × (4/(3 − cos φ))⁴, with φ running along the seam from 0 at the centre back to π at the zip: 32 mm at the centre back, 13 mm a third of the way to the zip, 6 mm halfway, 2 mm at the zip. - Square block, 64 cm long on an M, dropped shoulder; the hood in two layers, so that it stands open when it is down. Lining, zip tape and thread are black; the back and the front are left plain
