A man on an observatory terrace before sunrise holding his long black coat open on a lining quilted in diamonds, slipping a small torch into an inside pocket whose slanted edge is bound in red.

05:50, the observing platform

In 1963 Roger Penrose found a way to draw all of space and time on one finite page, bent so that light always travels at forty-five degrees. Nothing moves at a flatter angle than light, so cause and effect become geometry: your future is whatever lies between the two diagonals above you. One diagonal is the horizon. Below it some paths still lead out. Above it every path ends on the top edge, r = 0.

Penrose Coat

CHF 890 working price

For a night in an unheated dome: padded to sit still in, with an inside pocket for the red torch.

A long black coat for sitting still in the cold. Open it and the lining is quilted in diamonds, as linings are; here every line is the path of a ray of light, and the one bound in red is the horizon. The torch goes in there.

Size

A study: nothing can be ordered yet. The photograph is a generated image, not a picture of a made piece or of a real person.

  • Melton 480: milled pure wool, 480 g/m², matt black; lined in black cupro quilted over wool wadding, 80 g/m²
  • The lining is quilted in diamonds, every line at 45°: the paths of light in Penrose’s diagram. The inside pocket on the left is cut along one of them and bound in vermilion: the horizon. It takes a red torch, the only light an observer’s eyes forgive
  • Notch lapels and a collar that turns up against the wind; slanted welt pockets to warm the hands; a button front that stops at the hip, so it sits when you do; an inside pocket on the right for the A5 notebook, with a pencil loop
  • 118 cm long on a 48, with a deep back vent; cut to go over a funnel neck or a hoodie. Cut unisex in Italian sizes: a 42 is a women’s IT 40
  • Outside: the horizon tab at the back of the neck, 40 × 5 mm, woven in the colour of the cloth. Nothing else
  • Cut for: Lab Notebook
