Four brass bars stacked like a leaning staircase at the end of a table, seen side-on, the top one wholly beyond the table with a fine red line across its middle, two hands just letting go.

10:30, the poster session

Slide the top bar out until it is about to tip: half its length. Slide the two together over the third until they are about to tip: a quarter more. Then a sixth, then an eighth. Four bars reach 25/24 of a length beyond the edge, so the top one has nothing under it but brass, and the centre of gravity of all four sits exactly above the edge. The sums are half the harmonic series, which grows without limit: with enough bars the overhang is as long as you like. Zeno’s series, on the polo, stops at one. This one never stops, though it is in no hurry: two lengths take thirty-one bars.

For the four corners of a poster, a map or a book that will not stay open.

Four identical bars of brass. Their work is to hold paper flat. Stacked at the edge of a desk, each pushed out as far as it will go, the top one ends up wholly past the edge, and stays there.

A study: nothing can be ordered yet. The photograph is a generated image, not a picture of a made piece or of a real person.

  • Solid brass, uncoated: four bars, each 120 × 24 × 10 mm and about 245 g
  • Milled square within 0.05 mm, edges broken by hand, undersides lapped so they do not mark a print
  • One long edge of each bar carries four fine ticks, at a half, a quarter, a sixth and an eighth of its length, each cut half a millimetre shy of the limit: line a tick up with the end of the bar below and the stack stands, the top bar 3 mm clear of the edge. Ticks only, no numerals
  • One bar has a line across its middle filled with vermilion enamel, its centre of gravity. Put it on top: that line is past the edge too
  • Numbered on one end face; a slate box lined in felt, the four side by side
